GREVIO and the Istanbul Convention

The Faculty for Social Wellbeing in collaboration with The Department of Gender and Sexualities is hosting a round table entitled:

GREVIO and the Istanbul Convention

Speaker: Dr Marceline Naudi

Date: Tuesday 17 March 2020

Time: 10:00 till 12:00

Venue: Rector's Council Room

The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combatting violence against women and domestic violence (known as the Istanbul Convention) was opened for signature in May 2011 and entered into force on 1 August 2014.  Malta ratified the Convention in 2014, and eventually transposed it into its legal framework, including through the adoption of the Gender Based Violence and Domestic Violence Act and by amending its criminal code.

Implementation of the Convention by the State Parties is monitored by GREVIO which is the independent expert body elected from among the representatives of the State Parties.

This round table will discuss GREVIO and how it works to promote prevention, protection, prosecution and comprehensive policies.

Dr Marceline Naudi was first elected to GREVIO in 2014, and chosen as 2nd Vice-President of the expert group for the first 2 years, and then as 1st vice-president for the remaining 2 years of her first mandate.  In 2019 she was re-elected to the GREVIO for a further 4 years, and subsequently chosen as President of GREVIO.
