About the event

Allied Rainbow Communities is collaborating with the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability to offer an online 1.5 hours training entitled Disability Equality Training.

The training is FREE but spaces are limited and preference will be given to ARC paid-up members before opening up to non-members. You can register your interest for the training here:

https://forms.gle/eHhpBp3XhzW9EjFJA.

The Disability Equality Training session provided by CRPD include the following:

· Introduction to the models of Disability (Medical Model and Social Model of Disability)

· A short overview of the existing legislation and the UNCRPD

· Disability Etiquette (people with physical, visual, mental, intellectual, hearing impairment)

The training sessions are delivered by staff members of CRPD who are persons with disability.

During the session, some clips are also shown on Disability Etiquette and the dos and don’ts when interacting with persons with disability. There will also be some time dedicated to questions that the participants may wish to ask.

The aims of the training sessions are threefold:

• the theoretical aspect: to give participants a theoretical introduction to key issues related to disability;

• the experiential aspect: to provide participants with opportunities to meet disabled individuals and their relatives, to listen to their experiences sympathetically, but critically;

• the attitudinal aspect: to enable participants to confront some of the root causes of the fear and prejudice which individuals and society have for disabled persons and ultimately to develop a personal understanding and a positive image of disabled persons as equal and valuable members of society.

By the end of the sessions participants will understand how disabling barriers constructed by society erode the quality of life of disabled persons. Disabling barriers can be physical or attitudinal created by different sectors of society.
