About the event

This queer space invites members of the Maltese LGBTIQ community - young and old - to discuss our ways of “making ourselves at home”. This will be done through the use of everyday objects which could range from photos to memorabilia that make up daily life experiences.

The aim is to challenge the normative and traditional understanding of home space which can often side-line other domestic ways of being. Born in such a context, most LGBTIQ experiences are shaped by this larger understanding which is taken to be the natural way of being at home.

In this safe and queer space, we will use objects that represent our queerness in order to share our stories. We hope to foster a sense of belonging and connectedness through a casual conversation about cooking, crafting, decorating, eating and debating LGBTIQ home-making in everyday Maltese homes. This is an opportunity to have an intergenerational dialogue about the importance of queerness at home. We will offer a place to queer our ideas of home and why it matters to our community.

Facilitator:

Dr Rachael Scicluna is a queer urban anthropologist with an interest in the built environment, home and gender equality. Rachael is also a candidate contesting the next general election on behalf of the Partit Laburista.

Who is it for?

We welcome the entire diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, non-binary, queer, intersex communities. This is an opportunity to have an intergenerational dialogue about the importance of queerness at home to: - reflect upon the multiple ways heteronormativity influences everyday experiences of home, street and neighbourhood across different stages of life. - learn through generational stories. - share thoughts and opinions to create a sense of homeliness. - share experiences to feel empowered. - reflect on ways the LGBTIQ communities can support each other through supportive stories.
