17 May is the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia and this year's theme is #BreakTheSilence.
As many countries in the world face a backlash and regression of LGBTQ+ rights, it is important that as a community we keep holding our ground and affirm ourselves and one another for who we are.
Malta's LGBTQ+ Rights remains 1st in Europe however we are also aware that far-right groups and Christian evangelical sects in Malta exist and LGBTQ+ people are often the victims of such groups.
Our message is loud and clear - BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE AND LIVE YOUR TRUTH.
One also need to keep in mind that Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is not a sentiment felt solely by heterosexual individuals. It is also very much present in the LGBTQ+ community as well which leads to various mental health issues.
One may call themselves out & proud but would have issues accepting trans people, bisexuality or even people of the same sexual orientation but with a different gender expression (for example more effeminate).
In my experience as Pride Organiser, I've witnessed a lot of LGBTQ+ people being positively impacted because of Pride. Whereas I used to think that an occasion like Pride is important for society out there to witness and change their minds, I've come to the realisation that it is primarily there to give LGBTQ+ individuals that much needed sense of belonging and affirmation amongst themselves, that no other event or party can bring.
