I Am Pride! was the theme for this year's Pride Week which was celebrated between the 4th and 13th of July 2011. The activities featured an LGBT Film Festival screening BearCity, My Friend from Faro and The Secret Diaries of Anne Lister. Messages from President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Archbishop Gene Robinson delivered as part of the It Gets Better Campaign were shown before each film. Other events included WomenSpace, the Pride March and a Seminar on the Legal Recognition of Same Sex Couples organised in collaboration with the US Embassy.
I Am Pride! was a recognition of the progress that LGBT individuals have made in acknowledging and celebrating their diverse identities and a celebration of MGRM’s 10thanniversary

Interesting to see how the 2011 theme centered on personal identity rather than the usual collective march-style slogans. It makes me wonder if shifting the focus inward actually changes how people show up at events, or if it just feels like a softer version of the same message.

Reading about the 2011 “I Am Pride” theme makes me think it could work well for a small local support group’s opening session—asking each person to finish that sentence before sharing stories might set a more personal tone than typical icebreakers. Did the organizers find it easy to get people to engage with that framing?

The “I Am Pride” theme is empowering on a personal level, yet I’m not sure it captures the shared struggle and community solidarity that got us here. Do you think the individual framing might sideline the wider fights, or did the week’s events keep both in balance?

The personal framing of “I Am Pride” struck me as something we could actually use in everyday situations, like before a difficult conversation or when introducing yourself in a new group. I’ve started trying it as a quick internal check before volunteering events, and it changes how I show up.
