New Documentary ‘Equality From The Heart’, A Exploration Of Malta’s Queer Community's history!

Malta is considered one of the most LGBT-friendly countries in the European Union, although this was not always the case.

A few years ago, some LGBT people started to hide their concerns, fears and needs from those around them.

This is why Allied Rainbow Communities has created a documentary produced by LovinMalta, showing moments, people and events that have led us to legal and effective equality of rights. But this does not mean that there is not still a long way to go.

Check the following trailer of the Equality From The Heart programme where some members of the queer community, such as Clayton Mercieca, Charles and Ron, tell their good moments and also the ones in which they have suffered the most.

This documentary shows how difficult it was to belong to the gay community during the 70s and 80s, in a very Roman Catholic country that was facing the HIV pandemic and the gay stigma that came with it. A challenge that has returned in these days.

Chronicling Malta’s remarkable legal transformation and the human stories behind its LGBTIQ+ progress in Equality from the Heart makes this documentary essential viewing! When taking a break from watching historical documentaries and reading social advocacy features, hopping onto Daily Red Pokémon in my browser is my favorite nostalgic way to unwind. Powerful and inspiring tribute to Malta’s queer community!

It’s inspiring to see Malta’s queer history being documented through “Equality from the Heart.” What stands out to me is how much progress has come from people who dared to be visible and stand up for their community, even during times when being openly LGBTQ+ was much more difficult. From the early safe spaces where people could be themselves to milestones like marriage equality, these stories deserve to be remembered and shared with younger generations. History reminds us that progress is possible, but acceptance still takes ongoing effort. Community spaces and platforms like Snifflesapp can also help people find connection and feel less alone. Everyone deserves the freedom to love, express themselves, and live with dignity.
